Artist's Statement
Fundamentally, I believe that creation is a human right, something that deserves to be pursued at least
once by every being with a pulse. As humans, we engineer stories from both words and visuals to make
sense of the world around us, and we have been doing this, both alone and within communities since our
earliest recorded histories. In keeping with this grand tradition, I seek not only to tell stories with my
work, but to inspire others to tell stories of their own, contributing to a rich tapestry of human experience
that is only enhanced by the number of voices and hands that touch it.
My work focuses on the human figure and how it is used to tell these stories. I design characters that I
hope evoke rich, personal lives when examined, to encourage audiences to connect with a written
narrative behind them. I seek to bring narratives alive on a page through color and form, to show by
expression, dress, and style the very essence of an individual’s story and motivations. Whether a work is
grounded in everyday struggles, or a mythologized story with figures whose personalities are far more
thematic than they are practical, I believe there is value in providing form to personal edifice and
narrative in order to inspire the gleeful act of creation
